Boost Your Metabolism, Work Smarter… Not Harder!

Ignition of match, with smoke on blackWhy starve yourself?  Increase your metabolism and work smarter, not harder at releasing weight!  How do you boost your metabolism?

  • Have regular meals (don’t skip meals, especially breakfast)
  • Eat enough food (sounds funny, but too often our bodies go into starvation mode on “diets” which result in the inevitable boomerang of weight gain)
  • Eat the right foods in the right combination (eat fruit by themselves and avoid combining animal products with starches, non starchy veggies go great with anything and don’t forget your nuts and seeds)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Move your body (getting the large lean muscle to create a slow constant burn in your body is like cooking over a campfire: the red coals cook best! Use these large muscles in your butt and legs and burn baby, burn!)

An Apple A Day… How about 2?

So I am on a recipe jag and finding wonderful ways to eat better this summer and have it be DELICIOUS!!  How about a salad dressing that’s just what the doctor ordered…

  • 2 Apples (can be with or without skin, changes texture)
  • 2 T Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/3 C Raw or Roasted, but unsalted Cashews (or other nuts of your choice, except peanuts)

Puree in your blender.  It makes a thick dressing (which you can thin with apple cider or apple cider vinegar if you need it more watery, but personally I love the thick texture).  Put it over your best fresh salad.  Add sliced almonds, nuts or seeds. I like to add dill (it just makes me happy to eat dill).

Try it and let me know what you think.  No oil, you are eating nuts with your vegetables (which means you will get more vitamins and nutrients out of both) and its wonderfully summery, fresh and filling!

PS – It makes a nice amount so you will have enough to share – which is a great reason to gather friends and make it into a party! 🙂

Something’s Fishy!

We are getting into summer and it’s time to eat light and healthy!  Here’s a quick, easy and delicious marinade that has a very summery feel.  Create a marinade of:

  • 1/3 C fresh squeezed lime or lemon juice
  • 1/3 C honey
  • 2 T apple cider vinegar

Stir ingredients until completely blended.  You can then add garlic and dill (to taste) and put it over fish.  It works great with mild or strong types of fish.  You can wrap the fish in foil with the marinade, seal it and cook it on the grill, you can cook it in a pan, bake it or broil it.  The flavor is wonderful and when you serve it the marinade goes great over vegetables.  There is no oil or preservatives so it’s healthy and since fish cooks up in no time, you have a quick, easy, delicious way to make lunch or dinner.  Try it and see just how easy and delicious cooking at home can be this summer!

I am sharing two photos from an Article from Shambala Sun, a Buddhist magazine I found in my doctor’s office when I went for a physical.  I didn’t feel like reading People magazine and I found this wonderful article titled Embrace Change (Full Article Obtained by Shambala Sun – they couldn’t have been nicer): Shambala Sun Article – Embrace Change

Here was the best part for me.  Check out this photo of how natural fruit “changes” as it decomposes.  The elapsed time is 3 min and 44 seconds, kinda nasty by natural:

Now take a look at this photo from the same article showing the McDonald’s Happy Meal.  631 days of time lapsed and the food simply became petrified (notice bugs didn’t even want this stuff).  Remember real food decomposes.  Think of the chemicals that would be necessary to pull this off.  This made us stop eating McDonald’s.  YUCK!!

I have been asked by people, “What does Namaste mean?” and since I use it in my classes, in my written responses and my voice mail, I want to  explain my understanding of the word.

Namaste means: “The light in me, honors the light in you.  When I am in that place in my and you are in that place in you, we are one.”
It is a way to acknowledge the divinity in each of us.  The divine love within me sees the divine love within you.  It encourages us to think of others as the divine and remember that we are divine as well.  It is seeing with the eyes of love and knowing that we are not separate at all, that we are all one. I find this to be the most beautiful way to great someone or to thank someone.

Joseph Campbell explained how most native cultures thought of the world from a “thou” perspective.  Thinking of the earth, all living things (plants, animals, the whole universe, and people) as a “thou” instead of “it.”  Namaste is a greeting of “thou” from “thou.”

So as we begin the journey of 2013, keep Namaste in mind.  Think of how you can honor the “thou” in yourself and others and expand the beauty in the world, in people, and in this year!


Ditch the Scale!

As if you needed more evidence that the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.  Here is definitive proof!

This is 5 pounds of fat (2.5 kgs) vs. 5 pounds of muscle.  They weigh the same, but as you can see muscle takes up less space. Don’t judge your success by the scale.  Focus on inches and how your clothes fit.  You will feel better, look better and become comfortably thin instead of riding on the diet roller coaster.
